May Day

It's Saturday, May 1. May Day. A holiday here and many stores are closed. It's another beautiful day in spite of the weathermen predicting rain all day. Must be the same guys doing the weather here as at home. Nothin' to do but take a walking tour of the city so we walked 4.5 hours with our tour book guide. Maybe I'll skip the treadmill tonight.

We walked across the river and saw a bike race in progress. Lots of festivities today.

The lilacs are in full bloom and smell wonderful! This photo was taken in the old Jewish quarter near the merchant area.

We visited "the garden bellow (sic) the castle" - lovely! Interesting part of the town. Lots of embassies and government buildings. We walked up to the castle from a different approach than yesterday.

Walked back over the Charles bridge. Lots of tourists today and very hard to take pictures without strangers in them. Did manage to get someone to snap Paul and I at the bridge.

Walked back through the old Jewish Quarter. The Jews were buried in this one small area for centuries until 1789. 12,000 headstones, 100,000 buried, 12 deep. Note how the headstones are stacked against each other.

Off to Bratislava tomorrow and will meet with Ida's cousin, Maya, tomorrow evening. Plan to take autobahn to Brno and then some scenic side roads.
