The Cemetery

Today was rather gloomy and it drizzled most of the day, a perfect setting for visiting the graveyard. It is located at the end of the village, up a rather large hill. Ida was determined to climb it. This community does not have a funeral home so when people die, the casket it displayed in the home for three days then buried. Caskets are rolled part way up the hill and then hand carried by six men to be laid to rest. While the cemetery is not cared for, each gravesite is personally tended by family. Take a close look at the photo of the graveyard, you should be able to see the many flowers and candles. Generally, while there is someone around to tend the grave, the site is open and has lots of flowers. When people no longer are able to tend the grave they usually close it with large cement slabs.

Magda brought red Tulips from her garden and Ida lit candles at the family graves.

We visted several sites of the Oswald and Krupka families, including Anton Osvald Senior and his wife, three brothers of Anton Jr as well as his sister Maria.
