When Ida was planning for this trip, her brother Paul asked what she expected to see or find here in Hniedzne. She replied ..a small village, it will be rural and I would not be surprised if there were chickens running around the front yard. Paul thought Ida was crazy and indiated ..you will not see any of that, they are modern now. Well Ida was sort of right....
Our our way here Maya mentioned that many people kept a few cows, chickens and pigs for their own use. They all had jobs in the city. I mentioned to her that Canada had gentlemen famers, people who lived on small farms with a few animals for their personal use. No big deal, right.
As we drove up to the Vira home and parked the car, their neighbor was walking their cow home after work...to the back yard. Ida was sort of right. The chickens are not in the front yard, they are in the back yard.
Marta Krupka, who lives on the other side of the village, has three cats, two of which are named Mollie and Pussy ...and hens in the backyard.
Magda Virova also keeps hens in her back yard. Where many of our homes would have a garage in the back yard, here they have small barns where they keep their animals.
We had fresh eggs every day. The yolks are so yellow, they are almost orange.
We hear roosters most mornings and during the day.
